Traditionally, Microsoft provides active support for the three most recent Windows versions. As of now, Microsoft supports Windows 11, Windows 10 21H2, 21H1, and 20H2. The latter is now on its way out, and Microsoft reminds its users that they are about to receive a forced upgrade to a more recent version.
Microsoft started updating Windows 10 20H2 users to Windows 10 21H2 last month. If you use Windows 10 20H2, your computer will automatically update to the latest Windows 10 version unless configured not to install updates.
Because the most recent Windows 10 feature updates do not contain major new features and basically share a single OS build, installing Windows 10 21H2 will not take much time or effort. Microsoft says upgrading to Windows 10 21H2 feels like a regular monthly cumulative update. It also does not bring any changes to hardware requirements.
According to the official documentation, Windows 10 20H2 (released in the second half of 2020) will reach its end of life on May 10, 2022. On that day, Microsoft will release the last cumulative update for consumer-oriented editions, namely Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstations. Windows 10 Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise 20H2 will continue receiving support for one more year.
After kicking Windows 10 20H2, Microsoft will focus its efforts on supporting Windows 11 (initial release and the upcoming feature update), Windows 10 21H2, and Windows 10 21H1. The latter will reach its end of life on December 13, 2022.
According to Adduplex, Windows 10 20H2 currently holds 26.3% of all Windows 10 and 11 users, which means it is the most popular operating system after Windows 10 21H1 (28.6%). Windows 11, on the other hand, steadily increases its market share and now has 16.1%. The newest OS is also growing among gamers: Steam says 13.56% of its audience use Windows 11.
