Microsoft Unveils the Copilot Appearance Virtual Character

Mustafa Suleyman, CEO of Microsoft AI, has shared insights into the future evolution of Copilot. Accordingly, there is a vision in which the AI assistant develops a distinct personality and sense of continuity over time. He explains that Copilot will eventually exhibit traits akin to aging and personal history, creating a more human-friendly experience.

As part of this direction, Microsoft AI has introduced Copilot Appearance, a real-time interactive virtual character.

It is currently available as an experimental feature in Copilot Labs. The feature is accessible to a select group of users in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada. This character can display emotional responses such as smiling, nodding, or showing surprise during conversations.

Suleyman described the concept of "digital patina," where digital entities accumulate subtle signs of use and time, similar to physical objects. He expressed interest in embedding such characteristics into Copilot to create a sense of presence and history.

With these changes, Microsoft tries to turn Copilot into a true personal companion. This direction comes from Suleyman’s prior work on the Pi assistant at Inflection AI.

Suleyman also commented on the future of Windows, characterizing the current desktop interface as cluttered and visually overwhelming. He suggested a shift toward a calmer, more focused environment, particularly on  Copilot+ PCs.
