According to the latest report from Windows Central, Microsoft is about to delay the Windows 10X release to the second half of 2021. Previously, the company planned to ship first Windows 10X devices in the first half of 2021.

Windows 10X has been a pretty wild ride so far. This version of Windows should have been released for dual-screen devices, such as Surface Neo. After the latter's initial announcement, Microsoft decided to postpone Surface Neo indefinitely, likely due to different hardships encountered during the Windows 10X development process. Also, Microsoft shifted its focus from dual-screen computers to more traditional hardware, such as tablets and laptops. This change has also affected other manufacturers, who planned to release exclusive devices with Windows 10X. For example, Lenovo planned to ship ThinkPad X Fold with Windows 10X, but the company had to switch to regular Windows 10.

In May 2020, Microsoft said it is on track to ship the first computers with Windows 10X somewhere in the first half of 2021. Now plans for Windows 10X have changed again. This time, the OS is delayed to the second half of 2021. Microsoft needs more time to polish Windows 10X and make sure it is as smooth as possible.

Keep in mind that this report is not confirmed yet, and official Microsoft representatives refused to comment on the matter. Unless Microsoft acknowledges another delay, take this information with a grain of salt.

Windows 10X is a modern, "lightweight" OS aimed to compete with Chromebooks in the low-end, educational, and enterprise segments. In contrast to regular Windows 10, Windows 10X does not support Win32 apps, although Microsoft plans to bring Win32 support somewhere in the future. Also, there is no free-form window support. Users can work with either one or two apps simultaneously, similar to how multitasking works on iPadOS. You can read more about all the Windows 10X's known features in a dedicated article. There is also a unique tool that allows you to create a custom Windows 10X image for your PC.

Do not expect from Microsoft much initial focus on consumer-based devices with Windows 10X. Instead, the company will bring the best features from the OS to the traditional Windows 10 on your average PC. In the second half of the year, Microsoft plans to release a major update to Windows 10 to bring Sun Valley redesign with tons of new features and refinements. These plans are part of Microsoft's effort to refresh the OS on traditional hardware.
