Microsoft removed useful taskbar context menus in Windows 10 build 21337

Microsoft has changed the taskbar context menu in the recently released Windows 10 build 21337. Earlier, you could use it to disable or enable additional buttons, search bar, Cortana, organize windows, manage toolbars, etc. Now the taskbar context menu is missing some previously available options.

In the latest Insider Preview build, Microsoft has simplified the taskbar context menu and removed options to enable or disable additional buttons. From now on, you cannot enable or disable the Task View button, the on-screen keyboard button, the Windows Ink button, and the search bar. All the other entries remain unchanged.

Do note that removed options are still available in Windows Settings. You can go to Windows Settings > Personalization > Taskbar and change them there.

Build 21337 Taskbar Options In Settings

Microsoft did not mention the updated menu in the official changelog for build 21377, so these changes may be unintentional or simply caused by a bug. It is difficult to explain the logic behind removing useful commands and leaving the rarely used My People button on the menu.

In contrast to more interesting changes in Windows 10 that often available to a limited set of insiders, the updated taskbar context menu is live for all. You can check it yourself by updating to build 21377 in the Dev Channel. It is also possible that Microsoft will revert the changes after considering users' feedback or for some other reason.

Besides a somewhat controversial update to the taskbar context menu, build 21377 brings several quality-of-life improvements to virtual desktops. Now, you can rearrange virtual desktops and assign different backgrounds. Also, there is an updated File Explorer layout, a new Auto HDR feature for games, and several updates for inbox apps. You can learn more about the changes, fixes, improvements and hidden gems in build 21377 in a separate article.

  1. Microsoft continues to ruin Windows. Now we are forced to open that horrible settings app to turn off their useless features.
