Microsoft announced that Excel users can now use the Python programming language to work with data in spreadsheets. The feature is currently only available to members of the Microsoft 365 Insider program as a public preview.
The company notes that to use the function, you do not need to install any additional software or configure components. The Python integration will be part of the built-in Excel and Power Query connectors. The Python code is executed in the Microsoft Cloud, and the results of the calculations are returned to an Excel spreadsheet.
A new PY function has also been added, which will allow you to display Python code in table cells.
Thanks to a partnership with the Anaconda corporate Python repository, many popular libraries such as pandas, statsmodels, and Matplotlib will be available to Excel users.
Currently, Python in Excel is only available on the Windows platform. But in the future, it will appear in apps for other operating systems.
During the testing phase, insiders can use the new feature for free. Once it will reach production app versions, some features may not be available without a Microsoft 365 subscription.
