Microsoft has announced a number of changes in Windows 11 to make it easier to change default apps and give you control over pinning programs to the taskbar. In the coming months, the changes will become available Windows Insiders.
Microsoft has expended the existing URI scheme (the ms-settings protocol) for the Settings app. It will allow the app to open its page in Settings where the user can set its as the default app or change its file associations.
It is noted that Microsoft's own apps will follow the new rules similar to third-parry apps. This means that inbox apps will no longer silently override your preferences and become default apps without your knowledge. They will open the Settings app where you will have to specify if you want, say, to set Edge as your default web browser.
The company is also working on a new API that will allow applications to pin their icons to the taskbar. If an app requests pinning an icon, the user will receive a system toast notification with an Accept or Decline button.
So, the new scheme will follow these three principles.
- We will ensure people who use Windows are in control of changes to their pins and their defaults.
- We will provide a common supported way for application developers to offer the ability to make their app the default or pin their app to the taskbar. This will provide users a consistent experience across all apps.
- Microsoft apps will use the same common supported methods for pinning and defaults.
Microsoft says these changes should provide the trust, security, and stability Windows users expect. The changes will soon land in the Dev channel of Windows 11.
