Microsoft is working on a mixed reality headset that will compete with Apple’s Vision Pro

Microsoft has reportedly signed a deal with Samsung to supply micro-OLED displays for a new mixed reality headset in development. The device is rumored to be aimed at consumers and will be suitable for movies and games. This marks a shift in strategy for the company after the cancellation of HoloLens 3 and the demise of the Windows Mixed Reality platform.

Windows Central's Zach Bowden, citing his own sources, notes that Microsoft's mixed reality headset will likely run on the Android operating system. Since Microsoft doesn't have its own mixed reality platform, it's possible that Google's Android XR or Meta's tools will be used.

As you may remember, HoloLens 2 runs on Windows Core OS, which only allows you to run UWP applications. However, the UWP platform is considered obsolete, so it will clearly not be used in the new device.

Williams Bay Headset Vr Microsoft

The Williams Bay Project

Microsoft is reportedly working on a cloud solution codenamed "Williams Bay" that will allow full Windows desktop apps to run from the cloud and interact with them in a mixed reality space. "Williams Bay" will also give developers tools to create 3D extensions for Windows apps that will appear alongside them in a virtual environment. It is unclear whether this technology will be exclusive to Microsoft's headset.

The design is expected to resemble the Apple Vision Pro. The company plans to use OLED displays and pass-through cameras to simulate augmented reality. Work on the headset should be completed in 2025, but it won’t go on sale until 2026.
