Microsoft is experimenting with the Windows 11 user interface for portable consoles

After the success of Steam Deck, numerous companies have considered releasing their own portable gaming devices that run Windows 11 instead of Steam OS. However, Windows 11 may not be the most user-friendly operating system for devices with smaller screens. Recognizing this issue, Microsoft has been testing various versions of the Windows 11 user interface to provide a more comfortable experience on these portable gaming consoles.

Well-known leakster named WalkingCat recently shared on Twitter a few design concepts that were created for the Microsoft Hackathon event in September 2022. According to the leak, one of the projects showcased is "Windows Handheld Mode".

The Microsoft Hackathon is an internal event where employees can explore and experiment with ideas that are not necessarily related to their typical work. It should be noted that there is no guarantee that the projects developed during this event will be released, although some of them may eventually become fully-fledged products.

What's interesting is that the concepts for the upcoming version of Windows were showcased at the Microsoft Hackathon, and they closely resemble the image presented at Microsoft Ignite 2022. These concepts include a dock with application icons at the bottom of the screen, as well as a search box and system tray at the top of the screen.

The presentation indicated that all the suggested modifications could be implemented with the expertise of the appropriate specialists. Nonetheless, there is no guarantee that Microsoft will proceed with the development of the "Windows Handheld Mode" concept.
