A spokesman for the corporation said to GeekWire that organizational and personnel adjustments are a necessary and regular part of running company's business. He added that the Redmond software giant will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic areas of growth and support for customers and partners.

Microsoft's most recent fiscal year ended June 30, 2024. The company regularly restructures its business at the beginning of its fiscal years.

In June, Microsoft announced the layoff of about 1,000 employees. The layoffs affected the staff of the division that works on the HoloLens 2 augmented reality headset. Layoffs also took place in the Azure for Operators and Mission Engineering development departments.

In early 2024, Microsoft announced that it would lay off 1,900 employees at Activision Blizzard and Xbox. Following this, Blizzard President Mike Ybarra and Blizzard Chief Designer and Co-Founder Allen Adham left the company.

The layoffs come as Microsoft struggles to maintain profitability while increasing capital expenditures on cloud infrastructure needed to train and deploy artificial intelligence models.
