Microsoft has released Edge WebView2 Runtime for Windows 10

Microsoft has finally released the most recent version of Edge WebView 2 to consumer versions of Windows 10. This component supercharges modern apps, including those that come from the Store, with rich and secure web capabilities.

Microsoft itself is actively using it for building the apps. For example, Microsoft Office apps are based on the Edge Chromium platform.

Webview2 For Windows 10

The WebView2 Runtime is included in Windows 11 by default. But Windows 10 was staffed with a previous version of the component. Microsoft has finally changed that.

Having WebView2 available on all major platforms will save developer's time and reduce their efforts on building the apps. They no longer need to bundle it with their apps and check its presence.

The WebView2 Runtime will be available on devices running Windows 10 version 2004 and above. According to Microsoft, it will have minimal impact on disk free space, as all its files are hard linked to Edge. Still, the company is doing a phased roll-out to ensure that users won't run into issues with the updated component.

You'll find the official WebView2 runtime documentation here.
