Microsoft has paused the rollout of Insider Preview builds of Windows 10. Both Fast and Slow rings have been temporarily suspended as the Redmond giant prepares those rings for be updated for the rollout of the Unified Update Platform - which will be the delivery mechanism for future updates.
The recently announced Unified Update Platform (UUP) for Windows 10 will bring differential downloads to save the user's time and bandwidth. Microsoft is working to finish its rollout and finish optimizations for the Fast and Slow rings.
As explained by Microsoft's Bill Karagounis, "a differential download package contains only the changes that have been made since the last time you updated your device, rather than a full build." So, for Windows 10 Creators Update, which is in development as of this writing, the download size of updates is expected to be decreased by approximately 35% when upgrading to a new build.
The UUP was already enabled on Windows 10 Mobile devices starting with build 14959 which was released in November 2016.
Now, Microsoft is preparing to enable this feature for PC builds too.
Due to this preparatory step, they have paused all PC builds for both the Fast and Slow rings since Friday, 2nd December 2016.
It will be very interesting to see the Unified Update Platform in action because one of the biggest pains of Windows 10 is the size of updates. It is not known yet which build will be released using the new delivery mechanism and when it will be released. The latest release as of this writing, Windows 10 build 14971, supports the upgrade via the Unified Update Platform.
