Microsoft forces links in Teams and Outlook to be open in Edge

An announcement in Microsoft 365 Message Center reveals a change to how Teams and Outlook will now open web links. If an URL received in Outlook and Teams for Windows apps points to web resources from Azure Active Directory (AAD) and Microsoft accounts (MSA), then it will be forced to open in Microsoft Edge.

The official announcement states:

Web links from Azure Active Directory (AAD) accounts and Microsoft (MSA) accounts in the Outlook for Windows app will open in Microsoft Edge in a single view showing the opened link side-by-side with the email it came from

IT admins using Microsoft 365 Enterprise will have the ability to modify the policy, while those on Microsoft 365 for business will have to handle the change on each individual machine. This means that small businesses will be left with the added burden of figuring out what has changed. For those who are less tech-savvy, clicking a link in Outlook and having it not open in their usual browser could cause confusion and frustration, making it seem like their favorites have disappeared.

TheVerge contacted Microsoft regarding the change, and received the following response.

By opening browser links in Microsoft Edge, the original message in Outlook or Teams can also be viewed alongside web content to easily access, read and respond to the message, using the matching authenticated profile. Customers have the option to disable this feature in settings.

This change does not affect the default browser settings in Windows, and will ignore them. Microsoft remains interested in making the user switch to Edge exclusively, and uses all possible methods to achieve this goal. As you may remember, Widgets and Search in Windows 11 also redirect the user to Microsoft Edge when clicking on a web link. Those who aren't happy with this change can use a third-party app, MSEdgeRedirect, that returns those links back to your default web browser, say Chrome or Firefox.
