Recently, we wrote that Microsoft Edge extensions had already appeared in the Windows Store. They are expected to become available for testing for participants of the Windows Insider program. Another sign which indicates that this will happen soon is the availability of the Edge Extensions landing page which went live today for a short period of time.
The official website for previewing Edge Extensions shows a number of extensions already developed for the Edge browser.
The list of extensions includes:
- Microsoft Translator
- Reddit Enhancement Suite
- Mouse Gestures
Besides these, the web site also has instructions on how to install extensions. To install an extension in Microsoft Edge, the user has to do the following:
- Download an extension
- Select Run
- Select More... and then Extensions
- Select Load extension, choose the extension folder, then select Select folder
Microsoft is expected to redistribute extensions in a packaged file format which can be executed by the end user.
Once installed, the extension should then be listed in Edge. It looks like this method of installation will be used for manually installing extensions during the Preview period. Prior to release, it might or might not be possible to install extensions via the Windows Store.
Another interesting information we came across on the leaked web site is how the 'Extension bar' works - the bar that shows all the icons for installed extensions. In Edge, under the 'More' menu, you will see a new row, where extension icons will be displayed, and you can select them to view the options associated with that extension. See the following image:
As of this writing, Microsoft has removed the web site from the public and it is inaccessible. Credits: via.
