Microsoft Edge Ditches Rounded Tabs Before Stable Release

In February 2023, Microsoft introduced a revamped version of the user interface of the Edge browser. Among others visual changes, such as Mica and menus, it included rounded tabs. The redesign aimed to align the browser more closely with the Windows 11 aesthetic while also giving it a distinctive personality to stand out from its competitors. However, something went wrong with the rounded tabs.

The new style of tabs reminds of what Firefox has. They appear like buttons in the tab row, and no longer attached to the URL bar. However, this design was never enabled by default.

Earlier in August, users observed that Microsoft is making changes to description of the flag that enables the new UI. By navigating to chrome://flags#edge-visual-rejuv-rounded-tabs, you could spot a note added to the option stating that it will be removed.

Now the removal has been officially confirmed. In a statement to Windows Central, a Microsoft spokesperson claimed that rounded tabs are no longer in development. They did not provide a reason for this, despite the new design receiving positive feedback from users.

So Microsoft has retired floating rounded tabs, promises to improve and modernize the overall look and functionality of Edge. But in the near future Microsoft Edge will retain its design that is very similar to Google Chrome. The mentioned flag that enables the new design will soon be removed.
