Microsoft discontinues Cortana on Mobile, and Surface Headphones

An updated support document for Cortana reveals the changes coming for the digital assistant in the U.S.. Microsoft will end support for Cortana on mobile, the Invoke smart speaker, and Surface Headphones. The company says that it is adjusting the “focus areas of innovation and development to give our customers assistance where they need it most”.

Microsoft is terminating support for the following Cortana features.

  • Third-party Cortana skills will no longer be supported starting September 7, 2020.
  • Microsoft is ending support for the Cortana mobile app for Android and iOS starting in early 2021.
  • The Cortana service integration in the Harman Kardon Invoke speaker won't be supported starting in January 2021.
  • Microsoft is removing support for Cortana in the first version of Surface Headphones.

The Redmond software giant is re-purposing Cortana as a productivity assistant. Microsoft's digital assistant failed the competition with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The support document mentions that Microsoft “spent a lot of time thinking through this transition” and that it is looking to “innovate on ways Cortana can help you navigate the modern workplace”.
