Microsoft is about to discontinue old versions of Skype for Windows 10

It appears that the Redmond software giant is about to discontinue old versions of Skype for Windows 10. It is a modern Store app available for Windows 10 users. The reason behind this move can be a new version of Data Protection guidelines which follow GDPR rules for the European Union.

Microsoft has been sending emails to people who are still using the old version of Skype to upgrade to the latest version or risk losing their conversations. Here is how it looks.

We noticed you are using a version of Skype for Windows 10 that will no longer work after May 25, 2018. Older conversation history may be impacted during the upgrade. If you need help backing up your chat contact us. Not able to upgrade? Tell us more.

The date 25th May is the day when new GDPR rules will come into force. This suggests that the new rules could be the actual reason for Microsoft discontinuing some old versions of the popular app.

Upgrading Skype is a good idea from a security point of view. Skype for Windows 10 is available in the Store. If you have automatic updates enabled in the Windows Store, this update should already be installed on your device. If not, head to its page in the Store and hit the update button. If you don't have Skype installed, you can also grab it from there.
