Microsoft confirms a new bug in Windows 11 22H2 with slow large file copy

One more bug affects the newly released Windows 11 2022 Update, version 22H2. When copying large files from a network share, the operation can perform really slow. A large (multi-gigabyte) file can have up to 40% less throughput compared to SMB when copying (reading).

Principal Program Manager in the Windows Server engineering group, Ned Pyle, recommends using alternative solutions to copy large files, such as robocopy. The command he provides as a workaround is

robocopy \\someserver\someshare c:\somefolder somefile.ned /J

The /J argument tells the app to not use input-output buffers, that appears to be broken in Windows 11 version 22H2.

Sadly, the issue is not exclusive to network files and SMB. The bug can be reproduced on the local file system as well.

It is worth noting that robocopy is not the only tool that can become a workaround. There are multiple alternative file manager apps that offer they own file manipulation methods. So if you are affected, try to use some until Microsoft will release a fix for this issue.

Finally, the file copy bug is not the only issue you may face in Windows 11 2022 Update. There is also a confirmed issue with printers. For a specific class of devices the OS may removed advanced settings and options once you disconnect or turn off the printer. Microsoft has set an upgrade block for those who have such printers, so their devices won't see the version 22H2 installation prompt.

  1. I have this bug on my windows 11 test image (I have made my laptop multi boot) with version 22h2.
At first I thought it was specific to my Intel killer network suite but now read that it is a general Windows 11 22h2 problem with large files on network shares. I have a lot of video data on my synology DS 1522+ NAS and discovered this problem while copying a video, that I made of my grand children, from my NAS to my local machine. I have a 2.5Gbps LAN but did not get beyond 2Gbps with Windows 11 22H2 while normaly I get the full 2,5Gbps while copying from my NAS that itself has a 10Gbps NIC installed. I have reverted my production Image on this laptop back to 22H1 because of this problem since I transfer a lot of video data regularly.

  2. don’t forget the slow internet bug as well. before the update was getting 2.3gbps now after the update getting 400mbps. tested with a non-updated machine, 2.3gbps so it’s not isp.
