Microsoft acknowledges 3 more printing issues in Windows 11 and 10

Microsoft has updated the official Windows 11 Health Dashboard website, where the company keeps track of all known and confirmed issues with its latest operating system. Initially, when Microsoft launched Windows 11 on October 5, 2021, the list of known bugs consisted of three compatibility problems: issues with Intel's Killer Wi-Fi cards, issues with Oracle VirtualBox, and problems with apps that use non-ASCII characters in their registry keys. A couple of days after shipping the first cumulative update for Windows 11, Microsoft added new information to the issue tracker.

New known bugs in Windows 11

Here are the problems users might encounter.

  • Printer installation over some network connections might fail. Microsoft says a system might fail to download and install the necessary drivers for printers users try to connect for the first time. The bug affects only the automatic download, which means IT admins can install a driver using other methods. Note that this problem is not Windows 11-exclusive. According to the documentation, this new printing issue affects Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and even Windows 7 (client and server).
  • Printer installation via Internet Printing Protocol might fail. Windows might encounter an error when trying to install a new printer using IPP. The good thing is that this issue will not affect regular customers as IPP is not common for printers designed for home use. The bug affects client and server platforms with Windows 10 (down to version 1909) and Windows 11.
  • Windows might fail to deliver custom printing properties from a print server. Again, no need to worry about this bug as it does not touch standard network printing. Affected platforms include Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, and Windows 11, both client and server.

Although only the first bug of all three new known issues in Windows 11 might actually affect your system, there are more printing problems in the latest operating system from Microsoft. Brother, a popular printer manufacturer, recently confirmed that users experience issues connecting their printers via USB cables to computers with Windows 11. Also, Windows 11 does not treat well various printing utilities from Brother.

  1. Oh for heaven’s sake Microsoft fix your printing issues once and for all. How many months of issues do customers have to tolerate? They can’t fix it even after shipping multiple updates across several months?

  2. Their most requested feature in the feedback hub is restoring Taskbar positioning behavior (https://aka.ms/AAd2ifw). It has over 22k upvotes vs the next request’s 15k. It has over 800 comments vs ~500 on the next one. No sign of it on their Known Issues page, when clearly it is the most important issue to the people who try to tell them what we want.

Hopefully Windows 12 will undo all the unnecessary and unwanted changes introduced by Windows 11.
