Meet OneDrive 3.0 with Copilot, new design, and more

Microsoft has announced a new version of its OneDrive service. It uses the most recent Fluent design, supports Copilot, and includes changes that significantly improve your work with cloud files.

For You

The OneDrive web version welcomes the user with the “For You” section, displayed at the top of the service interface. It will display recommended files selected by artificial intelligence, and they can be located both in OneDrive and in Microsoft Teams or some other service.

Shared

The Shared section now includes all files shared through Microsoft Teams, email, or some other means. File permission management has also been improved.

People

If your team is working on multiple files, you can use the new People section. You can find the files you need by simply selecting a colleague by his last name and avatar. The list on the page can be filtered, and colleagues you work most frequently with can be pinned to the top of the page.

Colorful folders

It's now possible to change the color of folders in OneDrive. If you share such a customized folder with someone, they will also see it with the colorful icon.

Other changes

There is now the ability to add files and folders from OneDrive to your favorites. So that they can be quickly accessed from Windows 11, through the web version of OneDrive, and so on. You can add folders to favorites directly from the operating system interface.

The search function has been significantly improved thanks to AI. Now you can quickly find friends and family in photos saved on OneDrive. The feature is currently available as a preview to a limited number of customers. At the beginning of 2024 it should become available to everyone.

Next summer, OneDrive will feature a redesigned Create button that will offer a list of templates for presentations and other documents. You can view offers by hovering your mouse over them. Microsoft will also keep the ability to create a blank document.

Microsoft says the web version of OneDrive now opens twice as fast and lets you sort your files instantly. Scrolling and offline support have also been improved. So, you'll soon be able to open OneDrive in your browser without an internet connection. Files On-Demand is also coming to OneDrive on the web, meaning you can make the files you need available offline. Previously, offline mode and Files On-Demand were only available in the OneDrive desktop app.

Microsoft will soon add the ability to open any files from OneDrive in associated apps on the device will be added. For example, you will be able to open PDF and CAD in their respective applications.

Finally, Copilot support will be coming to OneDrive in December, although you'll need a Microsoft 365 Copilot subscription to use it. This feature will be able to track changes to documents that you and your colleagues make. Users will receive a daily summary that includes a list of important changes and a summary of comments added.

Microsoft says users can already experience most of the changes to the OneDrive interface at onedrive.com. Other changes will appear in early 2024.
