Linux Mint 18 XFCE Beta is out

A few days ago, the XFCE edition of the popular Linux Mint 18 distro became available to the public. Xfce is my desktop environment of choice over MATE and Cinnamon. Let's see what is new in this release.
mint 18 xfceLinux Mint 18 is a long term support release which will be supported till 2021. It is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

While the XFCE edition comes with the same XFCE version 4.12 as Linux Mint 17, it features updated software:

  • Kernel: 4.4.0-21:
  • Firefox 47:
  • VLC 2.2.2:
  • Gimp 2.8.16:
  • LibreOffice 5.1.3.2:
  • Cinnamon 3.0.6:

Also, apps used by default in Linux Mint 17 were replaced with new "X-Apps":
xplayer: Totem-based Video player
xed: Pluma-based text editor
xviewer: EOG-based image viewer
xreader: atril-based document viewer

The core ideas for X-Apps are:

  • To use modern toolkits and technologies (GTK3 for HiDPI support, gsettings etc..)
  • To use traditional user interfaces (titlebars, menubars)
  • To work everywhere (to be generic, desktop-agnostic and distro-agnostic)
  • To provide the functionality users already enjoy (or enjoyed in the past for distributions which already lost some functionality)
  • To be backward-compatible (in order to work on as many distributions as possible)

If you are not happy with X-Apps, you can always install the default XFCE apps and use them. They are available in the repositories.
