LibreOffice Creator Joins ‘End of 10’, Urging Windows 10 PCs to Switch to Linux

The Document Foundation, the creator of LibreOffice, has joined in supporting the End of 10 initiative  to migrate older Windows 10 PCs to Linux-based distributions.  According to their claim, the user don't have to follow Microsoft's upgrade path: There's a better option that puts control back in the hands of users, institutions, and governments: Linux and LibreOffice.

Together, these two solutions offer a powerful, privacy-friendly, and future-proof alternative to the Windows + Microsoft 365 ecosystem, The Document Foundation explained.

They also point that moving to Windows 11 isn’t just about security updates. The official post says that this move increases reliance on Microsoft through aggressive cloud integration, forcing users to use Microsoft accounts and services. It also results in higher costs due to subscription and licensing models, and reduces control over how your PC runs and how your data is managed. Plus, new hardware requirements will make millions of perfectly good PCs obsolete.

The end of Windows 10 doesn’t mark the end of choice, but the beginning of a new era. If you’re tired of mandatory updates, invasive changes, and the limitations of a single vendor’s commercial choice, it’s time for a change. Linux and LibreOffice are ready - 2025 is the year to choose digital freedom!

To help users migrate from Windows to Linux, The Document Foundation has outlined a few key steps to get the job done:

  • Start by testing Linux and LibreOffice on a second partition of your PC (for individuals) or in less important departments (for companies);
  • Check the compatibility of your software configuration with Linux and LibreOffice; most office tasks can be easily migrated or adapted with minimal effort;
  • Create documentation to help you understand how Linux and LibreOffice work, and provide training if needed;
  • Find a consultant who can help with the migration process, such as one certified by the Linux Professional Institute or The Document Foundation (for LibreOffice).

The KDE project has previously warned Windows 10 PC users that their computers could soon become unusable unless they install a Linux distribution with the default KDE Plasma desktop environment: Kubuntu, Fedora KDE Spin, openSUSE, and KDE Neon. But as KDE points out, Plasma isn't the only option. There are other desktop environments, too, such as GNOME, Xfce, and Cinnamon.

Earlier, security experts from ESET Germany recommended that Windows 10 users upgrade to Windows 11 due to the upcoming end of support for Windows 10 Home and Pro in October 2025, or install Linux on Windows 10 PCs that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11.

Microsoft will offer paid support for Windows 10 to users starting in October 2025. Regular users will be able to get an additional year of Windows 10 support for $30 per year. They will receive critical and important patches for the operating system, but will lose new features and technical support.
