Internet Explorer 11 may prevent you from upgrading to Windows 11

Microsoft has updated the upgrade block list for Windows 11. Windows 10 users may not receive the upgrade offer if they use IE 11 and browsing data remain not imported to the Edge browser.

Internet Explorer 11 is a legacy component in both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Microsoft has discontinued it several years ago. Yet, some organizations continue to use it due to compatibility issues with their CRM and other enterprise systems. There are some systems that still rely on ActiveX components that run in the browser.

To smooth out sharp edges of migration to a newer browser, Microsoft has implemented Internet Explorer mode in the Chromium-based Edge browser. It supports opening user-specified websites in a special tab that uses the IE rendering engine "Trident" in a special restricted mode. This allows working with web apps that utilize legacy technologies that no longer supported in modern browsers.

Internet Explorer 11-related upgrade block

Users who run Windows 10 and still use Internet Explorer 11 will no longer offered to install Windows 11. Microsoft enabled this upgrade block a few days ago. Having IE11 as the default browser or using it as a main browser will activate the restriction.

The company noted that after upgrading to Windows 11, the browsing data saved into IE 11 will become inaccessible.

In order to get Windows 11, the user has to import his IE11 information and data into Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 before upgrading to Windows 11.

As of this writing, this limitation is the last upgrade block that remains active for Windows 10 users. The rest have been already resolved or mitigated, including the VirtualBox-related one.
