In Google Search, AI Can Now Make Calls on Users’ Behalf

Google is rolling out a series of significant updates to its search engine, integrating new artificial intelligence capabilities to solve complex tasks. Those include advanced language models, deep search functionality, and AI-powered calling features for local services.

Users will soon be able to select between two distinct AI models in AI Mode via a new interface.

  • For intricate tasks such as programming, logic, or mathematical computations, the Gemini 2.5 Pro will serve as the preferred option.
  • For everyday queries, Google will use Gemini 2.5 Flash, a more cost-effective model.

The system automatically assigns the appropriate model based on query complexity.

Gemini 2.5 Pro

Gemini 2.5 Pro, launched in March 2025, represents Google’s most capable language model to date. It supports up to one million tokens per input, processes multiple modalities, and handles advanced reasoning tasks. The model receives regular enhancements and ranks among the top-performing AI systems globally, surpassed only by OpenAI’s o3-pro and xAI’s Grok 4 according to the Artificial Analysis Index.

Deep Search

Google has also introduced Deep Search, described as the most advanced search tool it has developed. Powered by Gemini 2.5 Pro, this feature executes hundreds of queries simultaneously, synthesizes data from various sources, and generates comprehensive reports with citations.

Designed for in-depth research, Deep Search supports use cases such as real estate evaluations and financial analysis, significantly reducing the time required for detailed investigations.

Deep Research

Deep Research is a similar feature available in the Gemini app. Both tools are part of Google’s AI subscription offerings, AI Pro and AI Ultra. Initially, these features will be available to subscribers in the U.S. participating in the AI Mode experiment within Google Labs, with plans for a global rollout in the future.

AI Will Make Phone Calls

There is also a new role for AI. Google is launching a feature that allows its system to make phone calls to local businesses on behalf of users. When searching for services like “dog grooming near me,” users will see a “Let AI check prices” button. Activating it initiates a call to multiple providers, after which the AI will prepare a summary of pricing and availability.

According to Google, this has to save users time while offering businesses a new channel for customer engagement. The feature will launch in the U.S., with all users receiving basic access. Paid subscribers will get extended usage limits.

Businesses can control whether to accept AI-generated calls through their Google Business profile settings. On its support page, Google said that robocalls are recorded and monitored to ensure quality.

Duplex AI works in a similar way, the feature is accessible through Google Assistant and is available on Pixel phones, iOS devices, and other smartphones.

Earlier in June, Google introduced the ability to have a two-way voice conversation with AI Mode. With the new Search Live integration, users can talk to the search engine by voice and view links.
