How to set the default Terminal app in Nemo

Nemo is the default file manager app used in Linux Mint Cinnamon edition. Nemo is a fork of the Files app from GNOME, also widely known as "Nautilus". It is an excellent app which fits the requirements of a newbie as well as an advanced user. It is feature-rich, extensible and stable. By default, it refers to the Gnome Terminal app for the "Open in terminal" command. Let's see how to re-assign the command.

The Gnome Terminal app is used in Linux Mint Cinnamon (and I can't wait for the day when they fork it as they did with X-Apps). However, my environment is highly customized. Currently, I am using Cinnamon in Arch Linux and I just don't have Gnome Terminal installed.

My favorite terminal apps are (u)xterm, because it is blazingly fast, and XFCE4 Terminal, because it has a handy toolbar which I use a lot. It may sound trivial but it improves my daily tasks and saves my time.

Suppose I want to use XFCE4 Terminal with the mentioned command in Nemo.

  1. Install the "cinnamon-settings" app if you do not have it installed. Most mainstream Linux distros provide it as a dependency package for Cinnamon, so there is a big chance that you already have it installed.
  2. Press Alt + F2 and type cinnamon-settings in the Run box.cinnamon-settings-run-box
  3. In the Settings window, go to Preferences -> Preferred apps. It looks as follows:preffered-apps preffered-apps-select-terminal
  4. Pick the desired terminal app there and you are done.new-terminal-in-action

Once you select the new app, it will be used as your default terminal app in Nemo. That's it.
