Google is changing the way its mobile search results appear for the end user by removing the display of full Uniform Resource Locators (URLs). This will affect all searches performed on smartphones and tablets.
The named reason for this are constraints of smaller screen sizes, where URLs often get truncated. Google points that the change will optimize the user experience by presenting a more organized and compact UI.
Previously, search results include "breadcrumbs," which displayed the hierarchical structure of a webpage's URL using ">" symbols after the domain name. This feature, introduced in 2009, will no longer be visible on mobile devices.
But the changes Google is making also affect much larger mobile device screens where the breadcrumbs could appear without issues. There, they could be obviously useful for finding at a glance where the link exactly points.
On desktop, URLs will continue to be displayed as two parts: domain and breadcrumb trail. The company will also continue to support breadcrumb trail markup.
