The YouTube platform has starting punishing ad-blocker users with hours-long commercials that cannot be skipped. Google admitted that it was the company’s doing. Here's their explanation.
According to Google, advertising is a vital lifeline for their creators, helping them grow and manage their businesses. That’s why using ad blockers violates the YouTube Terms of Service. In response, the YouTube team has launched a global campaign to encourage viewers who have ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium for an ad-free experience.
It is notable that YouTube has started showing different lengths of non-disconnectable series of commercials to users with ad blockers. But all of them are so long as to make one doubt the desire to watch the video that the user wanted. For example, in order to watch a 49-minute video, YouTube offered one user a 52-minute ad, while another user complained about a 58-minute ad.
YouTube's owner also reminded that "traditional" non-skippable ads in a video stream are limited to just 15 seconds. The company also acknowledges its efforts to detect users attempting to block ads and its interest in discouraging them from doing so. If this continues, Google reserves the right to disable playback.
Google stressed that this is the company's last desperate response to the most disobedient users with ad blockers, but if it comes to more complex solutions, Google is ready to ban such clients.
