Google enables End-to-End Encryption for RCS in its Messages app

Google has announced that RCS (Rich Communication Service) messages will now be end-to-end encrypted by default, signaling a move towards replacing traditional SMS messaging.

This encryption upgrade applies to both personal conversations and group chats within RCS. Alongside encryption, RCS also offers features such as input indicators, read receipts, and the ability to share high-quality photos and videos.

The update will impact both new and existing users who have not manually disabled RCS support in Google Messages. Some users may need to accept the terms of service if required by their mobile operator.

Google began implementing the RCS standard in 2020, although it was initially unavailable in countries such as Russia, China, Iran, North Korea, and Cuba. Furthermore, Google recommends Apple to support the RCS standard in iMessage.
