FTC investigates Microsoft, Google, and Amazon investments into OpenAI and Anthropic

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has initiated investigations into OpenAI, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Anthropic, according to Reuters. The agency has requested information from these companies regarding recent investments and partnerships related to generative artificial intelligence and cloud service providers.

The concern is rooted in the potential use of generative AI to pose a threat to national security. The request specifically seeks to examine the impact of deals between Microsoft, Google, and Amazon with AI developers on competition. Companies have been given a 45-day window to respond to these requests.

While Microsoft has indicated its willingness to cooperate with the FTC, Google hopes that the investigation will shed light on companies that lack transparency and have a history of blocking customers.

Representatives for Anthropic and Amazon have chosen not to comment, while OpenAI has not responded to Reuters' request for a statement.
