Firefox 104.0.1 fixes freezes when playing videos on YouTube

Mozilla Firefox 104.0.1 addresses an issue with YouTube video playback that was affecting some users. Existing browser users will receive it automatically using the built-in upgrade mechanism. The updated version is also available on the official website for download.

Firefox 104.0.1

The issue with YouTube videos was first introduced in version Firefox 104. This major release was notable for improved power efficiency, and also brought quick actions and PDF annotations to the stable channel. Check out what's new in Firefox 104 here.

Version 104 also introduced several video optimizations, such as subtitles on Disney+. Under the hood, it also includes NV12 image format zero copy feature, which is now disabled out of the box in version 104.0.1. The full list of fixes in the Firefox 104 branch is listed here.

If, for some reason, you cannot update your browser to version 104.0.1, there is a workaround for those who stick with version 104. Open a new tab and type about:config. In the advanced preferences editor, set media.wmf.zero-copy-nv12-texture and gfx.direct3d11.reuse-decoder-device to false . Restart the browser to apply the changes, and you are good to go. But it is recommended that you update to the latest version of Firefox.
