File Explorer will soon allow you to duplicate tabs, here’s how to enable this feature

On Windows 11, File Explorer will soon allow you to duplicate any open tab. The change comes as a hidden feature in Windows 11 Build 22635.3566, and you can enable it with ViVeTool.

The new feature has been discovered by PhantomOfEarth. It was not officially announced, and it is disabled by default. Most likely, it will become available to Insiders in the new feature. But curious users can already enable it using the ViVeTool utility.

When enabled, you can duplicate any of the open tabs from the context menu. Check out the following screenshot.

The following video shows the new option in action.

Do the following to enable it in Windows 11 Build 22635.3566.

Enable the Duplicate tab option in File Explorer

  1. Download the ViVeTool utility from this link.
  2. Unpack the downloaded archive to the c:\ViVeTool folder.
  3. Open a new Terminal as Administrator  by typing terminal in the Search and selecting the appropriate item.
  4. In Terminal, type the c:\vivetool\vivetool /enable /id:45262221,48433719 command and press Enter.
After you see the “Successfully set feature configuration” message in terminal, restart Windows 11 to apply the changes.

You are done! Now open File Explorer - you have the ability to create tab duplicates.

To disable the option (undo the change), use the following command:

c:\vivetool\vivetool /disable /id:45262221

That's it.

  1. They need to add a feature that would open new windows (usually initiated by other apps) as tabs on the current Window. Browsers have this, Notepad has this.
