Dev Home and Dev Drive are two new Windows 11 features for developers

As part of the Build 2023 conference, Microsoft announced two new features for Windows 11 that are designed to improve the operating system for developers who create various applications and games.

Dev Home Dashboard App On Windows 11Dev Home is a brand new app that aims to make it easier to set up a device as a developer workspace. With it, you can connect to GitHub, perform basic settings, load the WinGet configuration to automatically download developer tools and programs, and use the Dev Drive feature to create a separate disk partition with the ReFS file system. The Dev Home app Preview is available now on the Microsoft Store.

The Dev Drive feature is for developers who work with projects containing hundreds or thousands of files. With it, you can create a separate partition on your hard drive that will use the ReFS file system, which provides better performance and security. Microsoft claims that the "Dev Drive" feature can reduce build times by about 30% in file I/O scenarios.

Additionally, Microsoft has introduced a new WinGet configuration feature that enables users to set up a new machine or onboard a new project with just a few clicks. This unattended and reliable mechanism eliminates the need for users to manually search for the right versions of software, packages, tools, and frameworks to download or apply settings. With WinGet configuration, users can reduce the manual and error-prone process down to a single command with a WinGet configuration file. Simply run "winget configure" in the command prompt, and the process will be completed.
