In this article, we will see how to delete default themes in Windows 10. Some users never use them and are not happy to see them installed in the theme list. This can be done without third party tools.
By default, Windows 10 allows you to only delete themes which were installed using Windows Store or from a themepack file. However, some users want to get rid of the default themes too. Here is how it can be done.
To delete default themes in Windows 10, do the following.
In File Explorer, type or copy-paste the following in the address bar:
There, you can find the list of themes available on your PC. Each theme is represented by a file with the extension "*.theme*. You can double click the theme file to learn which theme it represents.
- aero.theme - the default theme named "Windows".
- theme1.theme - the theme named Windows 10.
- theme2.theme - the Flowers theme.
Take ownership of the file you need to delete. Refer to the following detailed tutorial: How to take ownership and get full access to files and folders in Windows 10.
Once you do it, you can right click the theme file and delete it from the context menu of File Explorer.
If you need to delete one of the high contrast themes, you need to repeat the steps above under the following location:
%windir%\Resources\Ease of Access Themes
The files there represent the following themes.
- hc1.theme - the High Contrast #1 theme.
- hc2.theme - the High Contrast #2 theme.
- hcblack.theme - the theme High Contrast Black.
- hcwhite.theme - the theme Hight Contrast White.
Again, it is necessary to take ownership of those files before you can delete them.
You are done. If you need to delete a third-party theme you installed from Windows Store or from a themepack file, refer to the following article: How To Delete Or Uninstall A Theme in Windows 10
