Microsoft has started the rollout of a new update to the Copilot app for Windows. The update, version 1.25082.132.0 and later, introduces enhanced functionality and interface improvements for Windows Insiders. The new version adds support for semantic file search directly from the assistant's chat, as well as an updated home page for quick access to recent documents and applications.

Semantic File Search
A key addition is semantic file search, available exclusively on Copilot+ PCs. This feature allows users to locate files using natural language queries. Users can now search for documents and images without recalling exact file names or contents. Examples include searching for "images of bridges at sunset" or locating a resume by entering "find my cv." The system also supports descriptive queries such as "find the file with the chicken tostada recipe."

File access permissions can be managed through the Permission settings in the Copilot Settings menu.
New Copilot Homepage
The updated Copilot home interface integrates recent applications, files, and chat history into a centralized view. A new "get guided help with your apps" section allows users to launch Vision sessions by selecting a recent application, offering real-time assistance. Users can also select a recent file from the left navigation panel to upload it directly into a Copilot conversation. Once uploaded, Copilot can summarize text, identify image content, or respond to related queries.

Copilot displays files based on the Windows "Recent" folder, which includes documents and media opened through compatible applications such as Word or Photos. The system does not scan the full device or automatically upload files. Only locally stored, compatible files that have been recently accessed appear in the list. File types compatible with Copilot include .png, .jpeg, .svg, .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, .csv, .json, and .txt.
Processing of a file occurs only after a user explicitly attaches and sends it in a conversation.
Gradual rollout
The update is being distributed gradually through the Microsoft Store to all Insider Channels. Not all users will receive the features immediately. Microsoft claims that this phased rollout allows for feedback collection and ensures a refined experience for future public releases.
