Compat2021 is a joint initiative by Google and Microsoft to improve the Internet

Microsoft joins forces with Google, Igalia, and the web community in committing resources to a cross-browser effort called #Compat2021. The goal of this movement is to improve compatibility for different web browsers. The companies will work on improvements in five major areas.

Edge 79 Stable Wallpaper

The joint working group will try to identify issues in the focus areas based on feature usage data, number of bugs (or number of stars/upvotes on a given bug) in each vendor’s tracking system, various survey feedback, CanIUse data, and test results from web-platform-tests. Microsoft says that the goal of their Edge team is to make Chromium pass 100% of CSS Grid tests in 2021.

The top areas of focus in 2021 are CSS Flexbox, CSS Grid, CSS position: sticky, the CSS aspect-ratio property, and CSS transforms.

CSS Flexbox is widely used on the web and has image scaling issues with auto-height flex containers. It was chosen because of 85% test pass in all modern browsers while being a top issue in the MDN Browser Compatibility Report.

CSS Grid is also a popular building block. It still has compatibility issues across  web browsers. Also, it doesn't supports animations in Chromium, while supports them in Firefox.

CSS transforms are used on 80% of page loads. It has a 55% rate of tests passed on web-platform-tests, so there is a room for improvements in each of the modern web engines, including Chromium, Gecko (Firefox), and WebKit.

You can track the progress on these compatibility improvements on the following page. The information is organized by release channels, including Dev and Stable for Edge and Chrome, Stable and Nightly for Firefox, and Stable and Preview for Safari.
