Google Chrome 79 is out today. Chrome 79.0.3945.79 includes a number of improvements made to phishing protection in the browser, also comes with Tab Freezing, and more.
Google Chrome is the most popular web browser which exists for all major platforms like Windows, Android and Linux. It comes with a powerful rendering engine which supports all modern web standards.
Here are the key changes in Chrome 79
Chrome warns when your password has been stolen
When you type your credentials into a website, Chrome will now warn you if your username and password have been compromised in a data breach on some site or app. It will suggest that you change them everywhere they were used. This is done via the Password Checkup utility which was available as an extension, but is now integrated into Google Chrome. It requires you to be logged in your Google account in the browser.
Phishing protection in real time
As you may already know, Chrome stores a list of 'bad' sites on your local computer and checks every URL you visit against that list. The browser updates this list every 30 minutes, but some phishing sites slip through that 30-minute window by quickly changing the domain. Chrome now offers real-time phishing protections on desktop, which warn you when visiting malicious sites in 30 percent more cases.
Predictive phishing protections
If you're signed in to Chrome and have Sync enabled, predictive phishing protection warns you if you enter your Google Account password into a site that Google suspect of phishing. This kind of protection has been created in 2017. Google Chrome 79 expands it to all the passwords you store in Chrome’s password manager. Users will now benefit from the new warnings.
Chrome is now able to detect that you PC is running low on memory, and can suspend tabs that you haven’t used or looked at in a while. The browser will stop all activity for tabs you have not used for 5 minutes. Just like in Microsoft Edge, the feature is not enabled by default and should be enabled with a flag,
- The new sign-in indicator|user profile appearance.
- Chrome now blocks web site elements from being loaded via plain HTTP.
- Installed Progressive Web Apps on Android now support maskable icons.
- You can now create immersive experiences with the WebXR Device API.
