Old Classic Sticky Notes for Windows 10

In Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft replaced the classic desktop Sticky Notes app with a Universal app. For many users, the classic Desktop app is the more preferable option. It works faster, starts faster and has no Cortana integration. If you want to get the Classic Sticky Notes app in Windows 10, then read on.

With Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft discontinued the classic Desktop app "Sticky Notes". Now, its place is taken by a new app with the same name. The new Sticky Notes app is a Universal (UWP) app, which comes with different features but as is Microsoft's way of doing things, it doesn't include all the features of the classic app. For example, the new app lets you create Cortana reminders from your notes. You can type a phone number and have it recognize it, and recognize URLs too which you can open in Edge. You can create check lists and use it with Windows Ink.

However, a lot of users are not happy with this new change. Many prefer the good old classic Sticky Notes app. The classic app consumes notably less system resources. It starts immediately and works much faster. The performance difference is especially visible on less powerful hardware like Atom and Celeron CPUs. The notes themselves are also a bit smaller, so users like their compact appearance more.

The old app does not depend on Cortana and Windows Ink, which also makes it useful for privacy-conscious people.

If you would like to get back the classic Sticky Notes app, here is what you need to do.

Get Old Classic Sticky Notes for Windows 10

  1. Download the installer from here: Download Classic Sticky Notes for Windows 10
  2. Run the installer. It will look like this:
  3. Just follow the instructions on the screen. The installer will extract all the necessary files quickly and create a shortcut on the desktop and in the Start menu. The Desktop shortcut is optional, you can choose to not create it.

That's it.

The package supports both Windows 10 32-bit and Windows 10 64-bit. It comes with almost the full set of MUI files, so it will be in your native language out-of-the-box. The following locale list is supported:

ar-sa
bg-bg
cs-cz
da-dk
de-de
el-gr
en-gb
en-us
es-es
es-mx
et-ee
fi-fi

You can uninstall the app any time from Settings - Apps and features:

The installer is built using genuine files from Windows 10 Build 14586. They are not modified and have not been tampered with. The installer doesn't modify any file or the Registry on your computer. The only reason I made it was to install the required MUI files in their proper location. Only the language applicable to your OS will be installed, so you will not get extra MUI files that you do not need.

Yessss!!!! I knew you will eventually put this!!! My biggest downside with the new sticky is the stikynot run command. Hopefully this will make it work again!!!

    One million thank you!!!

I need to add one line to the installer.
Wait a sec, I will do.

        Please re-download the installer.
The ‘stikynot’ command in the Run dialog now works.

I just wanna say. After installing an update AND the program, I cannot launch the program. I got an error saying “The ordinal 2635 could not be located in the dynamic link library C:\Program Files\Classic Sticky Notes\DUI70.dll.”

Modern version of this classic app is worse as always. When I still had classic Sticky Notes the program would start fast and work without any problems. Then for several months I didn’t have real need of using it until recently when I discovered that it was replaced. New one seemed to work fine at first. Nevertheless this lasted only for several days until I started receiving error message claiming that the program ’is currently not available for me’. Then it somehow fixed itself but stopped auto-starting at system startup so at the end I was just bothered too much to still use it anymore.

Unfortunately, those modern replacements are ALL worse, not just sticky notes. The new paint app is just a mess.

TBF I haven’t found anything like stickynot or even the modern Sticky Notes for Linux Debian/Ubuntu, they claim Tomboy notes is their replacement but it’s just awful.

I’ve personally been using Mint for the past 4 years happily with only booting Windows when I need either Unity for my work, or Photoshop when a coworker sends something that I need to edit. For Mint with the Cinnamon Desktop there’s this applet that does what it has to do and nothing more, I quite like it: https://cinnamon-spices.linuxmint.com/applets/view/194

      Happy Linuxing, cheers!

I sure wish someone could do something like this with the calendar app that they replaced.
The original small sized one was so much easier to work with, and to plan with.
Because it wouldn’t get in the way. – especially on small screens.

There is an even better “Sticky Notes” app for Windows that’s been around for ages. It’s called “Stickies” and it’s absolutely free from the developer’s website at www.zhornsoftware.com — including skins that make the sticky notes look just about any way you like. I’ve been using it for years and have yet to find anything even remotely comparable to the product, either freeware or paid-for.

Yes, finally what I was looking for. Thank you.
Just one more request can you give an option to hide its icon from task bar when opened because it takes unnecessary space.

    Hi,

Thank you so much this helped a lot, I hated the new updated version. One problem I am still having is that it won’t let me delete any of the open notes. I have 5 open and want to delete 3 of them and they just won’t for some reason. Any suggestions for how to deal with this because when I accidentally open one, they just keep accumulating and it’s annoying.

Where does the app store the .snt file? Looking in %AppData% and application folder, I can’t seem to find it…

I am using the app as the only StickyNote on Windows 10 1607 LTSB, so converting to the new app is not an option, and I can’t quite figure out how to import the Stickies from Win7.

Besides that it seems to work perfectly for me, thank you!

I don’t know why, but I’m such a huge sucker for these sticky notes. It’s more fun than notepad but not too much like the other colored note taking apps. It’s just perfect for someone who wants to jot down some sales metrics to keep on the dashboard. Thanks for the awesome share.

I was hopeful, but it looks like this does not run in Server 2016. I know this was for Windows 10, but there are guides for Server 2012 and 2012 R2, so I thought I’d get lucky.

In “C:\Windows\system32”, copy and paste the file “dui70.dll”
into the folder “C:\Program Files\Classic Sticky Notes”.

      It works well.

Do you happen to have this as a .msi file? I’d like to push this out to a larger group of users rather than touching each PC. The .exe file doesn’t seem to want to push out. Thanks!

I can give it a try. Also, where does the file save to and sync its data? with the MS sticky notes they were saved as a .SNT file in the C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Sticky Notes folder and an individual ever needed to move their sticky notes to a new PC they could just copy and paste the .SNT file over to the new PC. How would one do that with this application? I found the file path of the application itself under C:\Program Files\Classic Sticky Notes, but there is no .SNT or data file in this location (just the language choice, application file, .DAT uninstall file, and the uninstall application).
