As you may already know, one of the key changes in Firefox 72 is a reworked notification system that suppresses notification requests for certain web sites, especially for sites which try to subscribe you to their notifications without your interaction. Google Chrome devs are also working in this area. A new announcement from Google sheds some light on notification changes that are coming to Chrome 80.
With Chrome 80, Google is going to gradually roll out a new feature - 'Quiet UI'.
To protect notifications as a useful service for users, Chrome 80 will show, under certain conditions, a new, quieter notification permission UI that reduces the interruptiveness of notification permission requests. Immediately after the Chrome 80 release, users will be able to opt-in to the new UI manually in Settings. In addition, the quieter UI will be automatically enabled for users under two conditions. First, for users who typically block notification permission requests and second, on sites with very low opt in rates. The automated enrollment will be enabled gradually after the release while we gather user and developer feedback.
Quiet UI will become available on both Mobile and Desktop platforms. On Desktop, you'll be able to enable a new option: Settings > Site Settings > Notifications > Use quieter messaging.
The change is gradually coming to Canary, Dev, and Beta version of the Chrome browser. The app will include a special flag to force enable it, that is chrome://flags/#quiet-notification-prompts
.
The official announcement also mentions additional enforcement they will apply against websites that use notifications to annoy users, to push spam and malware.
