April update for Windows Subsystem for Android adds Picture-in-picture mode

The latest version of Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA), version 2303.40000.3.0, is out to users via the Windows Insider Channels. The new WSA comes with several enhancements,  such reliability and security improvements. Also, it enables picture-in-picture (PIP).

Apps that support the Android PIP feature can now use it when running inside WSA. Having the option to use apps in windowed mode and taking advantage of the useful Windows resize and snap features allows for a more flexible and efficient multitasking experience when using Android apps.

The full list of changes looks as follows.

  • Picture-in-picture mode supported
  • A new “Partially running” system setting added to WSA Settings app, which runs the subsystem with minimal resources but apps launch quicker than “As needed” mode
  • Linux kernel updated to 5.15.78
