3D Emojis may come to Windows 11 after all

Nando Costa, the lead designer at Microsoft Design, revealed that the promised 3D emojis Microsoft failed to deliver might come to Windows 11 after all.

A post on LinkedIn tells a story about creating 3D emojis for Windows back in 2020. It describes various aspects of the new variant and accessibility improvements it brings. The post provides insights into the ideas behind 3D emojis that look nowhere near what Windows 11 users have right now.

In reply to a Twitter user, Nando Costa said that Microsoft is still "working on that [3D emojis]." For now, that is all we have regarding the new emojis for Windows 11. Windows developers and the Windows Insiders team are yet to confirm the statement from Costa.

3D Emojis may come to Windows 11 after all

Microsoft initially planned to ship 3D emojis as a part of Windows 11, but in October 2021, the company released a much flatter, 2D version of the promised redesign. After users accused Microsoft of false advertisement, Brandon LeBlanc from the Windows Insider team said the marketing team used "wrong graphics" to promote new emojis in Windows 11.

Microsoft did not provide an official explanation for why Windows 11 received flat 2D emojis. Some speculate that the current variant looks better across various apps and screen sizes/resolutions. Technical aspects can also be a reason. Whatever the case, users might eventually get the 3D emojis Microsoft promised.

If you use Windows 10 and want to see what the new 2D emojis look like, here is a guide that describes how to install Windows 11 emojis on Windows 10.
