How to make the taskbar opaque in Windows 10

Like Windows 8, Windows 10 has a transparent taskbar and does not allow you to disable the transparency for some reason. Many users, including myself, are not happy with the transparent taskbar and prefer to have it opaque. Here is how to get it in your Windows 10.

The solution might be well known for you. My freeware, Opaque Taskbar works smoothly in Windows 10. Using this simple and lightweight app you can disable taskbar transparency with just a single click.

Opaque Taskbar is free and portable application which is compatible with Windows 10 x86 and Windows 10 x64. It comes with a special option to run at Windows startup and another option to restore taskbar transparency.

How to disable the taskbar transparency and make it opaque in Windows 10

  1. Download Opaque Taskbar for Windows 8
  2. Unpack the OpaqueTaskbar.exe to any desired location, e.g. in your Documents folder.
  3. Run the OpaqueTaskbar.exe and click the "Disable Transparency" button.
    The taskbar will become opaque.

  4. Next, tick the "Disable transparency" checkbox. The Opaque Taskbar app will stay in tray after startup and turn the taskbar opaque, even if you restart Explorer.

  5. Next, sign out and sign in back into Windows 10.

That's it. Enjoy your opaque taskbar.

Update. In Windows 10 RTM, Microsoft is added the native way to disable the taskbar transparency. See How to disable taskbar transparency in Windows 10 without using third party tools.

  1. Only issue I have with this software is I don’t want it open in my system tray. And there is no way to hide it.

      1. A version like that would be really nice. Make it an option maybe for people that still wants it. System tray thingy is just a pet peeve of mine, don’t want it cluttered.

I just want the simplicity of enabling it and then forgetting about it, then its perfect.

          1. Ah! Forgot to add “/notray” to the Startup checkbox :)
            Sorry :)
            Do the following:
Untick the Startup checkbox in the Opaque Taskbar.
Go to your Startup folder, e.g. press Win + R in the Run box, type shell:Startup, and create a new shortcut for OpaqueTaskbar.exe
In the shortcut Target text box, add the following after the OpaqueTaskbar.exe
            OpaqueTaskbar.exe /resident /notray
So you the Target text can look as follows:
            “C:\my apps\OpaqueTaskbar\OpaqueTaskbar.exe /resident /notray”
Today in night i will add the appropriate option to the GUI.
