YouTube is now available as a PWA

YouTube users may already know that this popular service wasn't available in form of a Progressive Web App, so the only thing you could do to run it in a dedicated window is to manually create site shortcut. This has changed. YouTube now have its very own PWA app.

Chrome and most Chromium-based web browsers allow creating a website shortcut by opening the main menu (Alt + F) > More tools > Create shortcut.

The PWA is a different thing. A Progressive Web App is a special web application that uses modern APIs and technologies that allow it to run like a regular desktop app. With help of the Chrome browser and Windows 10,  PWAs also have tight integration with the OS. You launch them like any other app from the Start menu, or using a desktop shortcut, and they will have a number of useful options previously unavailable to regular sites. There is variety of options like a built-in share command that make them feel like a native app. While PWAs are hosted on the Internet,  the user can install them from Microsoft Store and uninstall them using traditional methods.

Starting today you can open the YouTube.com website in Goolge Chrome, and you will be prompted to install it as an app.

To install the YouTube PWA app, click on the plus (+) icon in the address bar, and confirm the prompt.

Once you done that, you will end up with a full featured application that has everything and all that the website and its Android counterparts have. There are shortcuts for trending videos, view history, subscriptions, and so on.

The shortcuts are well organized into a sidebar on the left. On the top right , you'll find the app menu with quick preferences, and your profile icon that allows you to sign in and sign out from YouTube.

The app provides a streamlined user experience that should be familiar to both mobile and desktop users, with all the important options you would expect to have.
