Google has recently announced that it will be raising the prices of YouTube Premium subscriptions for users who had transitioned from Google Play Music and YouTube Red. Starting in January 2024, the cost of these subscriptions will increase.
Back in July, Google had already raised the price of premium subscriptions in the United States by $2, bringing the cost to $13.99 for both existing and new customers. However, users who were previously on Google Play Music and YouTube Red were given an additional three months at the original price. In an effort to express gratitude towards loyal customers, Google had promised not to raise subscription prices until December.
As that time is approaching, starting from January next year, previous users will now be charged $13.99 per month for YouTube Premium instead of the previous prices of $9.99 and $7.99.
Google says that it did not make this decision lightly. The price adjustment is aimed at improving the Premium service and supporting the creators and performers on YouTube, the company noted.
In early November, Google also announced that it would be raising the prices of YouTube Premium subscriptions in regions outside of the United States, including Europe, Asia-Pacific, and South America. The price increase has already taken effect as of November 1 in multiple countries such as Argentina, Australia, Austria, Chile, Germany, Poland, and Turkey. This change applies to individual, family, and student plans for both YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium.
YouTube Red was initially introduced by the corporation in 2014 under the name Music Key. However, in 2018, Google rebranded it as YouTube Red, coinciding with the relaunch of YouTube Music. On the other hand, Google Play Music was launched in 2011. However, it was eventually discontinued in favor of YouTube Music in 2020.
