Despite recent reports of widespread layoffs affecting multiple departments within Microsoft, internal sources state that the team responsible for developing the next generation of Xbox hardware remains mostly unaffected. Reportedly, the company continues to pursue its long-term vision for gaming hardware, including the development of a full-fledged successor to the current Xbox Series X console.
This upcoming console may also reportedly support games from third-party platforms such as Steam. The information aligns with Microsoft’s previously announced multi-year strategic agreement with AMD. The latter includes the design of future Xbox consoles, but also portable devices, PCs, cloud services, and various accessories. Backwards compatibility will be a key aspect of the next generation of Xbox, so the new Xbox will retain compatibility with the existing library of games.
This is the most positive news in the context of Microsoft's gaming division. Earlier, an email leak revealed the cancellation of games like Everwild, Perfect Dark, and other unannounced projects. That list apparently includes ZeniMax Online Studios' Project Blackbird. It also leaves the future of Forza Motorsport series uncertain.
