Xbox Game Bar gets compact mode in Windows 11

Microsoft has added a new compact mode for the Xbox Game Bar . The new layout is specially designed for smaller screens and portable devices. The update is gradually coming to Xbox Insiders enrolled in the PC Gaming Preview.

The main widget in compact mode displays a list of recent and running games. It also allows closing the running games. It supports widget customization, including the ability to add new widgets from the Store. The UI is optimized for Xbox controllers. On the latter, Microsoft's Oliver Xu said the following:

Compact Mode is a new experience that simplifies Game Bar, making it more intuitive and easier to navigate on small screens, Windows handhelds, and when playing with a controller.

With Compact Mode enabled, access to widgets and navigation is simplified to ensure you can get access to the content you want as easily as possible. When using a controller, you can switch between widgets quickly with left and right bumpers (LB/RB).

You can open Game Bar with the Win + G keyboard shortcut. For handheld devices, Microsoft is recommending mapping a device's button to that sequence to open the UI with ease. Finally, you can simply search for it in Start and pin to the tasbkar.

The addition of the compact UI to the Game Bar follows the previously released Xbox app with a similar user interface layout.
