Microsoft today released a new Insider Preview of Windows Server vNext. Build 20289 reveals that the company is going to postpone the product release date for the server software.
When installing, Windows Server says it is "Windows Server 2022", which is the marketing name of the product since build 20285. Build 20285 had version 20H1 in the "About Windows" dialog.
However, if you open the About Windows box (winver) on this new build, you will see that its version is now 21H2
.
This minor thing is actually a major change. It indicates that Microsoft is postponing the release from the first half of 2021 to the second part of the year. In fact, this goes along well with the new release schedule for consumer versions, which receive a minor update ahead of the major one. However, this server build still says "2009" in the Registry for the ReleaseID value.
The change log for this Server release includes two known issues:
- Shutdown Event Tracker is displayed every time a user logs on even when the user is a member of the administrators group and the user has closed the tracker window properly.
- Auto Logon does not work correctly in some scenarios.
Thanks to Wzor for the heads up.
