Windows 11 will have checkpoint cumulative updates

As part of update delivery optimization, Microsoft is introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates. Windows 11 version 24H2 will be the first version of the OS to use this new mechanism. It will allow you to get features and security enhancements via the latest cumulative update through smaller, incremental differentials containing only the changes since the previous checkpoint cumulative update. This means that you can save time, bandwidth, and hard drive space.

Once Windows 11 24H2 cumulative update is released as a checkpoint, subsequent cumulative updates will generate binary differentials against the version of binaries in the latest checkpoint, rather than the RTM version. This means that the differentials will be smaller and easier to apply on devices that have already synced to the latest checkpoint cumulative update, resulting in a faster update process.

When an annual feature update is distributed using servicing technology and an enablement package, the new release will have a common core operating system with the previous release. As a result, it will also receive the same monthly updates, leading to larger and more impactful update files with each new release that has its own servicing lifecycle.

By introducing a checkpoint in conjunction with the availability of a feature update and an enablement package, the monthly updates for these releases can start fresh and small. This enables Microsoft to offer more enablement packages for feature updates, allowing users to easily and efficiently adopt them at a faster pace than with a traditional feature update.

This change will result in smaller update file sizes, which will have a positive effect on download and installation speeds. It will also reduce the load on the Windows Update server.

  1. I block almost everything from MS today. Also Windows Update and Microsoft Defender Antivirus. However, I download the updates manually after a few days. My trust is almost at zero when it comes to Mikrosoft unfortunately. Same with Apple and Google! My firewall has a lot of work to take care of ;)

Haha, maybe that’s why half the internet doesn’t work :D
