Microsoft may allow uninstall the Recall feature with a couple of clicks. The appropriate option is now exposed in optional features of Windows 11 in Insider builds.
Earlier, the Redmond firm promised to make Recall flexible and more secure. Now the company follows that plan. In addition to the ability to block Recall with group policies, Windows 11 now offers the uninstall option.
The new option is exposed in the Windows Features dialog (optionalfeatures.exe) that manages optional features of the OS. The checkbox is called "Recall". By removing the check mark the user can uninstall Recall.
It is possible that the ability to remove Windows Recall appeared due to the requirements of the European Union. In the same fashion, Microsoft earlier stopped integrating Copilot into the operating system, making the assistant a separate application that can be easily removed. However, the option to remove Recall is currently available to everyone.
The Windows Recall release, originally scheduled for June 18, 2024, has been delayed due to security issues. Windows Recall automatically takes screenshots, analyzes content, and enables semantic search to find any information a user has ever seen on their computer. But experts who got access to the initial version of Windows Recall quickly discovered that the feature saves its data non-encrypted.
Microsoft promises that the first public builds of Windows 11 with Recall will be available to Windows Insiders in October 2024. It will include a much improved Recall version with all its data properly protected from third-party.
