Microsoft has announced that the upcoming major update to the Windows operating system, set for the release this fall, will be Windows 11 version 24H2. It won't be Windows 12, as many expected. The announcement is part of the latest Windows 11 Insider release notes for the Build 26052 (Dev and Canary).
It states the following.
- Starting with Build 26-xx today, Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels will see the versioning updated under Settings > System > About (and winver) to version 24H2. This denotes that Windows 11, version 24H2 will be this year’s annual feature update.
So Windows 11 version 24H2 will be an annual feature update. Similar to previous releases, new versions of Windows 11 will be launched in the second half of the year.
Initially, rumors were suggesting that Microsoft will build the new operating system, "Windows 12", on the Germanium platform. That's because the plarform introduces a number of AI-powered features, some of which will require a new processor with an integrated NPU.
However, it appears that Microsoft is keen to avoid further fragmentation within its user base, which would occur if Windows 12 were to be released. With Hudson Valley being the next feature update for Windows 11, all users will be able to smoothly transition to the new version of the operating system without any complications.
