Now Official: Windows 11 version 23H2 will be a small enablement package

You may remember rumors telling that Windows 11 version 23H2 will be a small update to version 22H2, similar to how Windows 10 has received its last three updates. Today, Microsoft confirmed this information in the published roadmap for client versions of Windows. The updated roadmap should help users and organizations plan upgrades to new versions of the operating system, and sheds some light on the future of Windows 11 Version 23H2 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 with Volume Licensing.

Windows 11 Version 23H2

As expected, Windows 11 version 23H2 will be based on the same codebase as version 22H2. This means that version 23H2 will be distributed as a small cumulative update that simply activates improvements and new features. The same approach was used for Windows 10 updates from 20H2to 22H2, and 1903 to 19039. Because both versions share the same code base, you don't have to worry about app and device compatibility. The cumulative updates for both versions will also be the same.

The next "big" release of Windows 11 is slated for 2024, often referred as Windows "12" in media.

Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 with Volume Licensing

Previously, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC was only available through direct licensing from IoT OEMs. Based on the feedback, Microsoft has decided to make licensing more flexible. Starting August 1, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 will be available through the Volume Licensing program.

You may consider this solution if you need a 10 year Windows support cycle for IoT devices. This is also useful if you don't want to purchase specific IoT LTSC licensed devices through OEMs.
