Windows 11 User Base Reaches One Billion, Surpassing Windows 10 Adoption Pace

Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella announced that Windows 11 has reached one billion users. He shared this achievement during the company's fiscal second quarter 2026 earnings call. Nadella noted the user base grew over 45 percent year over year. The milestone occurred within the recent holiday quarter.

Windows 11 achieved the one billion user mark in 1,576 days. This period is shorter than the 1,706 days required by Windows 10 to reach the same milestone nearly six years ago.

At Microsoft Ignite on November 19, Windows chief Pavan Davuluri indicated strong adoption momentum. He stated that nearly one billion people were using Windows 11 at that time. This disclosure signaled robust user growth continuing through December.

The growth of Windows 11 during the past quarter coincided with Microsoft's conclusion of support for Windows 10. This transition also helped increase Microsoft's Windows OEM revenues for the period.

Microsoft initially planned for Windows 10 to operate on one billion devices within three years of its release. The timeline extended following the discontinuation of Windows Phone. Windows 11 has now attained the milestone in a reduced timeframe.
